On a second playthrough, Classic difficulty is a breeze because you know all the best stuff to get early and how to set up a good party composition, but before you know any of that stuff it's really punishing. On my first playthrough, I had to turn the difficulty down for most of the first half and then I turned it back up there. At the end of act 2, especially if you've been doing all the sidequests and robbing/killing merchants, you get strong enough to where the regular difficulty is totally manageable. In my opinion, it's overtuned to where unless you have very strong builds there are certain fights that you have to use cheese tactics like splitting the party, stealth, traps, pulling aggro one by one, teleporting lava or deathfog onto enemies, etc. I would honestly just bump the difficulty down a notch.
